v1.c14.961
He spends the vassa at Maṅkulapabbata. After the performance of the miracle he follows the custom of all Buddhas and ascends to Tāvatiṃsa in three strides to preach the Abhidhamma to his mother who is born there as a deva, and there he keeps the seventh vassa. The multitude, gathered at Sāvatthi at the Yamakapāṭihāriya, refuse to go away until they have seen him. For three months, therefore, Moggallāna expounds to them the Dhamma, while Culla Anāthapiṇḍika provides them with food. During the preaching of the Abhidhamma, Sāriputta visits the Buddha daily and learns from him all that has been recited the previous day. At the end of the vassa, the Buddha descends a jewelled staircase and comes to earth at Saṅkassa, thirty leagues from Sāvatthi.⁴⁰
