v1.c7.398

Once, earlier, when Udāyī had teased Ānanda for not having benefited from his close association with the personality of the Master, the Buddha had defended Ānanda, saying, “Say not so, Udāyī; should he die without attaining perfect freedom from passion, by virtue of his piety, he would seven times win rule over the devas and seven times King of Jambudīpa. Howbeit, in this very life shall Ānanda attain to Nibbāna.”¹⁰⁰
