**Ujjenī.**—The capital of Avanti (*q.v.*). In the Buddha’s time, **Caṇḍa-Pajjota**¹ was king of Ujjenī and there was friendly intercourse between that city and Magadha, whose king was **Seniya Bimbisāra**.*²*
