¹⁶ *Cp.* the story of Nandiya Thera. Buddhaghosa says (DA. iii. 864) that when Sūrambaṭṭha, after listening to a sermon of the Buddha, had returned home, Māra visited him there in the guise of the Buddha and told him that what he (the Buddha) had preached to him earlier was false. Sūrambaṭṭha, though surprised, could not be shaken in his faith, being a *sotāpanna*.
