v2.c35.1521

¹⁴ For an incident connected with one of these visits, see s.v. Suppiyā. DhA. (i. 100 f.) says that once five hundred young men of good family entrusted the care of their wives to Visākhā. On one occasion, when accompanying her to the monastery, they became drunk and committed improprieties in the presence of the Buddha. The Buddha frightened them by emitting a dark blue ray of light, thus restoring them to their senses. This was the occasion of the preaching of the Kumbha Jātaka; see also J. 11 f.
