When Mahāviṣṇu took the incarnation of Śrī Rāma for a stipulated purpose, the devas took birth as monkeys in forests, to help Mahāviṣṇu. Mention is made in Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Bāla Kāṇḍa, Sarga 18, that Nala a very big monkey was begotten by Viśvakarmā.
