Abhimanyu, son of Arjuna and Subhadrā, sister of Kṛṣṇa. § 130 (Amśāvat.): I, 67, 2749; 95, 3830; 221, 8026), is an incarnation of Soma (I, 67, 2748), wherefore he enters the womb after his Karman has elapsed (XVIII, 5, 162; etymology of his name (I, 221, 8027); he is one of the Pāṇḍavas (I, 95, 3834). In the beginning of the exile of the Pāṇḍavas he is carried to Dvārakā with his mother by Kṛṣṇa (III, 22, 895), where he is educated and protected by Rukmiṇeya (III, 183, 12584 and 12586; cf. 235, 14733). After the elapse of the exile he joins the Pāṇḍavas in Upaplavya with Kṛṣṇa and Subhadrā (IV, 72, 2358, cf. 2350), and is there married to Uttarā, daughter of king Virāṭa (I, 2, 489; IV, 72, 2355; V, 1). He fights bravely in the great battle, until he on the 13th day, when enjoined by Yndhiṣṭhira to break Droṇa's cakravyūha (VII, 35, 1519), is surrounded and killed by Jayadratha and his people, leaving his wife Uttarā with a yet unborn son, Parikṣit, the only one left to propagate the race of the Pāṇḍavas. At first he is not seen in Heaven by Yudhiṣṭhira (XVIII, 1, 26), but later he is shown to him beside Soma in Heaven (XVIII, 4, 146).
