*Yudhiṣṭhira* wished to know whether any fault is incurred by one who gives instruction to a person belonging to a low caste. *Bhīṣma* recited what he had heard certain *ṛṣis* say: that such instruction should not be imparted to a person of a low or mean caste. He related the story of a *Caṇḍāla* who occurred in days of old: There was a *brāhmaṇa* who lived in the *Himavat*, inhabited by *rākṣasas* and *piçācas* (a). A *Caṇḍāla* asked the *brāhmaṇa* to initiate him into a life of righteousness. The *brāhmaṇa*, at some distance, refused, saying that he must live according to the rules of his caste (description).
