² Here I have taken the liberty of inserting a full stop which does not occur in the PTS. edition of the text. If we read *H'evaṃ n'atthi with doṇa-mite* we have a definite contradiction of Makkhali's doctrine as expressed elsewhere. Buddhaghosa agrees in associating the phrase with the preceding sentence: *H'evaṃ n'atthī ti evaṃ n' atthi taṃ hi ubhayaṃ pi na sakkā kātun ti dīpeti. Sum. Vil.* i, p. 164.
