Rockhill also quotes two Chinese versions of the *Sutta*.⁴ In the first of these, the translation of which is dated A.D. 412–13, we find Pūraṇa maintaining his original doctrine of guiltlessness; Makkhali has acquired part of Ajita’s materialism; “Kakuda Kātyāyana” has a portion of Makkhali’s determinism; Sañjayin remains a sceptic; while the Nirgrantha Jñātṛiputra claims omniscience, as did the historical Mahāvīra.
