We are doubtful about Dr. Barua’s first category, although in the Jānakī-haraṇa the term may have been intended in this sense.¹ We have seen that the second usage is very common in early Buddhist literature. But we must add a rider to Barua’s statement, to the effect that some at least of the heretical tīrthaṅkaras seem to have been loosely allied, and to have had many points of doctrine in common.
