Mahāvīra, after describing the eight finalities, declared that Gosāla, to excuse his own unseemly conduct, would also institute the new doctrine of the pāṇagāim and apāṇagāim. The former, which Abhayadeva defines as “kinds of liquid suitable to an ascetic”,¹ are :
