The second cave, at Kondīvte near Bombay, is Buddhist. It is of later construction, but it retains the circular inner chamber with a *stūpa*.⁵ It is possible that the Barābar caves originally also contained *stūpas*, not hewn from the rock, but artificially erected and since removed.
