S u p i n a. This word Barua has identified with the Sanskrit suparṇa, a divine bird,⁶ but we cannot agree. Supina, in Pāli, like suviṇa in Ardha-māgadhī, must be equivalent to the Sanskrit svapna, and mean dream. We can only suggest that the seven and seven hundred supinā are dreams of great psychic significance, supposed to occur just before the final emancipation of the soul.
