Snakes are the servants of Rāja Bāsuk, with whom Gūgā had dealings. One legend makes Gūgā’s bride the daughter of Bāsaknāg. The Rāja has a temple at Priyāg (Prayāg) which is a place of pilgrimage, especially at the time of the Nāg-pañcami.³ A saying connected with Gūgā may be of interest. ‘It is a good thing for a Hindu to listen to the tale of Gūgā at night during the Dīwālī festival as a means of preventing snakes entering houses.’⁴
