Before making a final analysis of the lists, it may be well to record a tradition, reminiscent of the earlier Śaivite sects, which they relate at Ṭilla.¹ There were formerly eighteen panths of Śiva and twelve of Gorakhnāth. These two groups fought each other; and, as a result, twelve of the former and six of the latter were destroyed. The remaining twelve panths of the two sects constitute the order of the Kānphaṭas, or Gorakhnāthīs. Those which were derived from Śiva are: (1) Kaṇṭharnāth of Bhūj, in Kacch; (2) Pāgalnāth of Peshāwar and Rohtak; (3) Rāwal of Afghānistān; (4) Paṅkh; (5) Ban of Mārwār; (6) Gopāl, or Rām ke.
