Even in the description of the gods and goddesses we see that compassion is almost everywhere an attribute of them.² We may, for instance, compare the description of the goddess Vārāhī as found in her meditation in the *Abhidhāno-ttara*, where she is described as having a heart melted with compassion for beings,—as engrossed in the emotion of universal compassion, bent on doing good to all beings.³
