² We have seen that, according to the Bhakti-ratnākara, Sanātana and Rūpa were already well versed in śāstric learning as well as predisposed towards Vaiṣṇavism when Caitanya met them; and this must have been one of the reasons why Caitanya selected them for the special task of systematising the theology of the sect. It is noteworthy that Sanātana Gosvāmin in the 11th verse of his Bṛhad-bhāgavatāmṛta states:
