The basic feeling (Sthāyi-bhāva) of the Ujjvala or Madhura Rasa is, as we have already noted, the Priyatā or Madhurā Rati, the fondness or sweet feeling which inspires the mutual (*mithaḥ*) erotic enjoyment (*sambhoga*) of Kṛṣṇa and the Gopīs.¹ This feeling of Kṛṣṇa, being brought to a state of relish in the heart of the Bhakta² by means of its appropriate Vibhāvas, Anubhāvas etc., becomes the erotic Madhura Rasa, which is styled "the chief among the Bhakti-rasas (bhakti-rasa-rāj)." The work, therefore, proceeds at once to the detailed analysis of the Vibhāvas etc. of this Rasa.
