The partial interpretation in the oldest parts of the Upanishads of certain ritual conceptions and practices which are deeply rooted in consciousness in the light of the doctrine of Brahman, and the partial substitution for them of new ceremonies more in harmony with the spirit of the new doctrine, is related to the symbolic view of Brahman. We propose briefly to indicate the leading characteristics on both sides.
