The pre-Ārya stage, in fact, decides the path which a candidate is to follow. If one aspires only to mokṣa or nirvāṇa and accumulates kuśalamūlas of not a very high excellence as the Hinayānists do, he is a Śrāvaka and if he aspires to Buddhahood in order to become the rescuer of the world, i.e., develops Bodhicitta and accumulates kuśalamūlas which only an exceedingly rare person can, he is a Bodhisattva.
