v1.c12.s3.23
It was not difficult for Buddha to win over the Sākyas because he himself belonged to the clan. Anuruddha, Kimbila, Bhagu, Ānanda, Devadatta, Nanda, Upāli and many other Sākyas joined the order at Buddha's request. Under the leadership of Mahāpajāpati Gotami,¹ many Sākyan ladies also followed the example of the Sākyan youths and joined the order leading to the growth of the order of nuns.
