v1.c19.s1.12
It will be observed that Rāhula was ordained by Sāriputta and not by Buddha, and that Sāriputta acted as Rāhula’s *ācariya*. It was on this occasion that Buddha empowered his disciples to confer ordination.¹ Buddha himself did not observe any rule for conferring ordination. After the conversion of Sāriputta and Moggallāna, he admitted into the Saṅgha a few others like Aṅgulimāla by the words “ehi bhikkhu.”
