They were to observe all the sikkhāpadas prescribed for the monks, and were given the general directions that they should not indulge in such acts as would give rise to desire (*rāga*), attachment (*saññoga*), acquisition (*ācaya*), dissatisfaction (*asan-tuṭṭhi*), and so forth.
