Abbreviations ... ... ... 348-349 the *Consilium de emendanda Ecclesia* of 1537, which was drawn up by Contarini, Carafa, Sadoleto, and Pole, and which was intended to be the basis of the reform, was a document of the greatest importance. It was a frank admission of the abuses which had crept into the Church, and it proposed a series of measures to remedy them. But the *Consilium* was not destined to be carried out. The conservative party in the Curia, led by Carafa, was suspicious of the moderate reformers, and the Pope himself, though he had appointed the commission, was not prepared to go as far as they desired. The *Consilium* was never officially adopted, and the reform movement, which had seemed so promising, was checked.
