v2.c35.2

The third group of schools, according to the Pāli tradition, comprised the Mahīṃsāsakas and their offshoots, viz., Dhammaguttikas, Sabbatthivādins, Kassapikas, Saṅkantikas, and Suttavādī. According to this tradition the Mahīṃsāsakas were the earliest to secede from the Theravāda among its sub-sects. Out of the Mahīṃsāsakas, developed the Sabbatthivādins and gradually the other schools.
