On a lower plane of popular thought stands the conception of the Nyāyasāra,⁴ reflected in the Sarvasiddhāntasaṃgraha,⁵ in which Çiva appears as the omniscient creator by whose grace, the reward of devotion, the worshipper obtains release in the form of eternal pleasurable consciousness. This in the Nyāya and Vaiçeṣika we find, as in the Vedānta of Rāmānuja, an effort to adapt philosophy to meet the cravings of popular theology.
