⁵ Keith, *Taittirīya Saṁhitā*, i. pp. cv–cviii. For the averted heads of the priests cf. the *capite operto* of the Roman ritual (as opposed to the Greek), which may be a sign of separation from the profane world (cf. Reinach, *Cultes, Mythes et Religions*, i. 300 ff.), but which may be merely a more efficacious means of escaping recognition by the soul of the indignant victim, as in the case where the criminal is veiled before execution.
