⁵ Hertel's assertion (*Muṇḍaka Upaniṣad*, pp. 45 ff.) that in AV. x. 7. 32 ff. *bráhman* is used as masculine, is not probable, nor is it certain that *bráhman* is the product of Skambha, though that may be the sense of verse 17, as opposed to the identification in 32–4.
