⁴ *Per contra* Hopkins (JAOS. xxii. 335) conjectures that Yoga practices were grafted on to the Upaniṣad doctrine from the ‘royal knowledge’; he gives no ground save that Yoga first appears in the Upaniṣads of the Yajurveda, the royal Veda, and this is certainly not an argument of any value.
