More positive evidence cannot be found: the view that the Kaṭha Upaniṣad is older than Buddhism, because the legend resembles in some degree the legend of the Buddhist Māra,⁴ ignores the fact that the story is already found in the Taittirīya Brāhmaṇa. The suggestion of Walleser ⁵ that in the Tevijja Sutta we are to find a reference to the Aitareya, Chāndogya, and Taittirīya Upaniṣads is quite impossible,⁶ and the definite use of any particular Upaniṣad by any Buddhist Sutta has still to be proved. The similarity ⁷ of the language of the early Upaniṣads to that of Pāṇini is decidedly against a very early dating. Certainly it is wholly impossible to make out any case for dating the oldest even of the extant Upaniṣads beyond the sixth century B.C., and the acceptance of an earlier date must rest merely on individual fancy.
