To the evidence here collected† of the prominent importance of the Kurupañcâlas in the Vedic world—evidence, a part of which is drawn from the "Çatapatha Brâhmana"—will be opposed the important part, which the people of Videha, living far in the east, and their king Janaka play in this very text. The attitude of the "Çatapatha Brâhmana" to the eastern parts of Hindostan is so instructive on the matters which now engage our attention, that we shall go into greater detail on this point.
