∗ Both words signify “death,” and are derived from the same root, mar, “to die.” The mode of expression in many places of the Dhammapada makes the identity of Mâra and Mrityu (Pâli maccu) clearly evident. Compare ver. 34, “Mâradheyyam pahâtave,” with ver. 86, “maccudheyyam suduttaram; v. 46: chetyâna Mârassa papupphakâni adassanam maccu-râjassa gacche.” Cf. also ver. 57 with 170.
