∗ It is significant that, although the speculations of the Upanishads regarding the Âtman and the Brahma must, in Buddha's time, have been long since propounded, and must have become part of the standing property of the students of the Vedas, the Buddhist texts never enter into them, not even polemically. The Brahma, as the universal One, is not alluded to by the Buddhists, either as an element of an alien or of their own creed, though they very frequently mention the god Brahma.
