This moment the Buddhist regard as the great turning-point in his life and in the life of the worlds of gods and men: the ascetic Gotama had become the Buddha, the awakened, the enlightened. That night which Buddha passed under the tree of knowledge,* on the banks of the river Neranjarâ, is the sacred night of the Buddhist world.
