The historical inquirer cannot create certainties where there are only potentialities. Let each individual come to a conclusion, or refrain from coming to a conclusion, as he thinks porper; let me be allowed, for my part, to declare my belief that, in the narrative of how the Sakya youth became the Buddha, there is really an element of historical memory.
