⁶⁷ See DN. I. Tevijja°. MN. II. Caṅki°. A frequently occurring passage reports Buddha as asserting that belief based on Saddhā, Ruci, Anussava, Ākāraparivitakka and Diṭṭhinijjhānak-khanti is as liable to be erroneous as right (MN. II. 218, 234; AN. I. 189 etc.). Just as Buddha criticized the Brāhmaṇas for accepting on faith and tradition alone, so did he criticize the Nigaṇṭhas—MN. s. 101. In the later sūtra on the Four Pratisaraṇas this very attitude is reflected, as also in the well known quotation from the Ghana sūtra (see Stcherbatsky Buddh. Logic I. pp. 76–77).
