v2.c24.s19.16
Four varieties of invalid knowledge are mentioned, which are doubt (saṃśaya), misconception (viparyaya), indefinite cognition (anadhyavasāya), and dream (svapna). Śivāditya reduces these four to two, doubt and error, and brings under the former conjecture (ūha), indeterminate knowledge and indirect reasoning.¹ Śrīdhara justifies the separate mention of dreams on the ground that “it occurs only in a particular condition of the body.”²
