In the case of physical changes we require a whole in which they occur. All atomists ascribe reality to empty space. If there were more than one space, then atoms which whirl about in different spaces cannot have anything to do with one another. Space is the basis of the notions of east and west, of far and near.⁵ The apparent diversity of space is determined by its effects.⁶ Things maintain their relative positions which they could not do apart from space.
