According to Sir R. G. Bhandarkar, Vāsudeva and Kṛiṣṇa were originally names of distinct individuals. In the opinion of that great scholar Vāsudeva was a Kṣhatriya belonging to the Yādava, Vṛiṣhṇi or Sātvata race who founded a theistic system. Later on "he was identified with Kṛiṣhṇa whose name had been handed down as that of a holy seer."¹
