We know that several Vedic epithets of Vishṇu were in the epics and the *Purāṇas* transferred to Kṛishṇa Vāsudeva. We have already seen that in the *Ṛigveda* Vishṇu is revered under the title "*Śipiviṣṭa*."¹ Now this epithet is given to Kṛishṇa in the Great Epic.² In the *Śatapatha Brāhmaṇa*, i, 2,5,5, Vishṇu is called Vāmana; in the *Mahābhārata*³ Kṛishṇa receives the same epithet.
