¹ The Śāṇḍilyasūtram, 1, 1, 2 defines Bhakti as Parānurakti-rīśvare, intense devotion to the Lord, i.e., to God " conceived of as personal, a Saviour worthy of trust and ready to be gracious " (cf. Hill, The Bhagavad Gītā, p. 50; Mrinal Dasgupta, IHQ, 1930, pp. 315, 322 ff.).
