² The word *uposatha* corresponds to the brahminical Sanskrit term *avasatha*, which was the name for the day before the soma-sacrifice, from which the Buddhist term is no doubt derived. The Sarvāstivādins use the form *poshadha*, which was doubtless the form in their dialect before their canon was turned into Sanskrit.
