¹ Skt. mānatva and mānāpya; on this passage in the Vin. Buddhaghosa (iii, 629) explains bhikkhumānatta as bhikkhūnaṃ mānanabhāva, the paying of some kind of respect to the other monks. This makes it probable that the culprit remained in a special state of subordination, but the origin of the term remains obscure.
