¹ Though the queen was not a virgin, this is what is generally understood by the term virgin birth. Both in the Mahāvastu (ii, 5) and Lalitavistara (46) she asks the king’s permission to spend the night alone. It is also implied in the Pāli by the fact of her taking the vows.
