The formulae were obtained by Ptolemy ( c. 150 A. D. ), though the exact method followed by him is not known. The first of these formulae i.e. the expression for d₁ was rediscovered by W. Snell¹ in 1619 A. D. Brahmagupta's method for the determination of the diagonals of a cyclic quadrilateral constitutes a remarkable contribution in geometry of the time.
