The *Karaṇapaddhati* furnishes interesting information on the calculation of approximations of *mahāhāra* : *mahāguṇa* ( i. e. *b* : *a* ) and has applied the both upward ( below-top ) and downward ( top-below ) techniques to calculate the successive approximations. The relevant verse of the *Karaṇapaddhati*, (ii, 5) runs as follows :
