The problems of altar construction in the *Śulbasūtras* necessitated the evolution of simultaneous indeterminate equations of the type : i ) x + y = 21 x/(p²) + y/(q²) = 1 ii ) x + y + z + u = 200 x/m + y/n + z/p + u/q = 7½ etc.
