Mānasollāsa of king Someśvara (1130 A.D.) while describing dhūpabhoga for the kings, mentions three varieties of dhūpa or incense: cūrṇadhūpa, powder, piṇḍadhūpa, roll, and varttidhūpa, sticks. The text, then, describes the clay-vessel for containing embers, with many holes on the upper side, for fumigating bedrooms and the whole palace (Shrigondekar 1939, II, pp 144-45).
