In the beginning the author pays his obeissance in three verses, to Vyomakeśa (Śiva), Gajāsya (Gaṇeśa) and *Gandhayakṣa*, who are conventionally held to be the presiding deities of the science of cosmetics and perfumery. The author then summarises the purposes of the *gandhaśāsana*, in the text two verses.¹⁰
